Drug Addiction: Information and Prevention

Interpretation

Your mind explains your behaviour - but not always honestly

When something gives you temporary relief or pleasure, your brain remembers it.

It starts creating explanations:

“I need this to relax.”
“It helps me forget.”
“It’s not that serious.”

But these are not always facts. They are interpretations.
Your mind is trying to protect you from discomfort. But in doing so, it can hide the risks.

Not every urge
needs a yes

Over time, your perspective can become narrower.

You may stop noticing the consequences:

  • changes in mood
  • problems with concentration
  • conflicts with others
  • loss of control.

That is how addiction develops. Not suddenly. But step by step.

Pause before you react

There is a moment where you can stop and look again

When something becomes a habit, it starts to feel automatic.

You don’t question it anymore. But there is always a small space between the urge and the action.

In that space, you can pause.

You can ask:
“What is this giving me, really?”
“What is it taking from me?”

You don’t need a perfect answer.
Just noticing is already a step.
When you don’t pause, the pattern continues.
When you pause, you create a moment of choice.

Choose a different direction

Small decisions can break a pattern

You don’t have to change everything at once.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
But you can take one small step.

You can:

  • say no once
  • spend time in a different environment
  • talk to someone you trust
  • ask for support.

These steps may seem small. But they create distance between you and the pattern. And that distance matters.

You are not alone in this.
Reaching out is not weakness.
It is a way of taking
control again.
